from the D to the district

greetings from virginia! spent the beginning part of the week in DC and now am laying low in virginia until tomorrow afternoon...then it's back to the district to move into my apartment!!! wahooo. the past week was CRAZY; i stayed with mick for a few nights (enough said), started my fellowship, took care of my puppy (LOVE HER) celebrated my birthday with old friends and new (including my new roommie natasha!!) and tried not to lose my mind in the process. finally, FINALLY, tomorrow i move into my own place. cannot wait. classes start monday but i had a nice year-long break from school (and a long weekend this weekend) to get me ready. so here's to graduate school, art history, the countless art history papers i'll be writing and books i'll be reading, tenleytown, the metro, countless (but always cherished) walks with georgette, dog strollers (yes, i have one...it's amazing...took georgette shopping and to lunch in chinatown twice this week), the shalom house (the nickname my family has given the house above my apt.), the white house, smithsonians, shoddy bars in adams morgan and the hot guy tina and i saw there last weekend and all of the cool, crazy things in store.

celebrity journalism...c'est la vie

definitely prefer writing about REAL news to all of the celeb fluff i've been assigned lately. (i can't sleep by the way, in case you noticed the time of this entry...6am). just finished up a piece on dj am (like my aim screen name! what a coincidence...i didn't mention that to him  nor did i ask anything about his ex nicole richie...i wanted to though, but somehow "she doesn't seem very bright...how is it that she's not been hit by a car? hmmm... but i did like the black dress she wore to that award show!..." just didn't seem appropriate). now i'm on to a piece on daniel vosovic from project runway. honestly, i don't listen to much hip-hop (shocker!) and i hardly ever watch TV unless it's conan....i'm so much less interested in these subjects (they've--their publicists, rather--been relatively nice, i can't complain) than religion and culture and social issues i'm used to.

anyways, i've been working like crazy writing, with the kids, tutoring, and yes, even waitressing. i suppose it's just a taste of what my first year of grad school will be like.

i move to DC in one month! cannot WAIT!

four jobs

yes. it's true. i'm currently working 4 jobs. one of these jobs will go solely toward supporting georgette. yes, dogs are expensive pets but oh so worth every dime! the rest of my cash flow will go toward rent for next year in dc. so in addition to my day job at the boys and girls club (i get a raise beginning monday!) and my writing for the news  i'm going to be tutoring a little boy in math in the mornings and last night i started waiting tables (you'll believe it when you see it...me waiting tables) at this cute little cafe where my little brother is the cook. so, yeah, my little brother is sort of my boss. it's a very humbling experience all the way around. i actually really liked last night...i thought it was fun and the owner is very nice and really generous. plus, it's a gourmet cafe and there are lots of good things to eat...my brother made me a sandwich when i got to work last night and i made myself an oregon chai...my favorite! so, definately not my calling in life but a good gig for now.

memorial day wahooo

aaaand another summer begins. finally heard some good news about grad school! got into queens and american and nyu wants me to join this other (MA) program for humanism and social thought...i've unofficially decided on american in dc though. i will probably accept my place in the program this week. i'm excited about living in dc and really excited about working with a professor in my field who teaches in the dept. there. so here goes to being a broke college student for the next two years. for all my peeps in nyc:  i will be visiting at some point in the near future and perhaps living there while i get my PhD. dc is just a better fit for me right now!

my new puppy!! below is a picture of georgette. she is my new beagle, 8 months old, adorable and super sweet. i adopted her from a rescue shelter that i wrote an article about back in january.  lucie died a few weeks ago i still miss her very much, and i cried for days after she died. but she was really suffering toward the end and i believe she is in a better place. i got georgette about a week and 1/2 after lucie died. my  dad said no more dogs but i couldn't resist...plus she needed a home and she is adorable. i actually didn't even know anything about her before i got her except that she was a beagle. i called the lady who  runs the rescue and told her that i wanted to help out...she said i could foster a beagle. so i went out to the sticks to meet her and she brought me georgette. it was honestly love and first sight (as it ALWAYS is with me and my pets...instant attachment) so i brought her home (henry was a good sport, drove out there with me even though he felt like i was going against dad's wishes) and i'm in the process of adopting her. she looks a little evil in the picture cause her eyes are droopy and a little red when she lays down but she really is a sweet and loving animal. i her! she loves to nap and i've caught her staring at herself in the mirror a couple of times. i think that means she and i are a match made in heaven! my dad actually dotes on her the most! he loves her. she may stay at home my first semester of grad school. not sure yet. but i really wanna take her with me to dc! we'll see.
